The Shy Vaudevillian

Live comedy special taping Nov. 14th at 7pm by stand-up comic and storyteller Christine Ferrera

Join comedian and former ventriloquist dummy Christine Ferrera as she takes you on a guided tour through the history of comedy, including stops along the way to consider why feminism isn’t funny, what made Jerry Lewis cry and what happens when the shyest kid in town lands the lead in the school play. Using cutting-edge 19th-century technology, Ferrera confronts her own fears about mortality, mental health, and Twitter handles.

The granddaughter of Sicilian immigrants who ran the legendary Logan Square burlesque club Cave of the Winds, Ferrera combines stand-up, storytelling, and handmade visual elements to create a distinctly modern vaudeville experience where body dysmorphia, lotto scratch-offs, and mansplaining collide face-first with a banana cream pie. The show will resonate with performance art lovers, prop comedy nerds and anyone who’s ever been told to “smile more.”

Don’t miss this one-of-a-kind evening on Thursday, Nov. 14 at The Den Theatre (Theater 2A) hosted by dazzling master of ceremonies The Queeny Bitch with performances by musical surrealist Dan Hanrahan and local legend Laura Hugg. Audience members will be part of the recorded special to air on streaming platforms in early 2025.

Christine Ferrera is a nationally touring stand-up comic and storyteller known for her absurdist, self-deprecating yet relatable humor. She has worked with acclaimed comedians Michael Ian Black, River Butcher, and Emma Willmann, and performs regularly at clubs, crawl spaces and condemned malls throughout the Midwest. Ferrera’s book, “Starbux Diary,” about her decade-long correspondence with Starbucks Coffee Company was voted one of City Paper’s “Top Ten Baltimore Books of 2015” and described as, “Hilariously personal.” Her stories have been featured on The Moth Story Slam as well as NPR’s “The Story” and “The Signal.” She has been a featured performer at the Amsterdam Fringe Festival and Wham City Comedy’s (Adult Swim/IFC) USA Tour. Time Paggi of The Bad Oracle wrote of her stand-up, “Ferrera’s rigorous with her crafted style but presents humor of greater nuance and bite.” She lives and works and eats and prays and loves in Chicago.
